“Sin Nombre” is a wonderful debut for Cary Joji Fukunaga – an memoir about all the harrowing obstacles that illegal immigrants from Central America face before they ever even advance the U.S. border, if they even do it that far. You can delight in this movie whatever your politics because it’s refreshingly free of preaching and lectures and messages. I’m against illegal immigration but I tranquil got caught up in it on an emotional level. Fukunaga simply presents a straightforward record concerning Sayra, a Honduran girl about 15 y/o and Willy, a Mexican boy a tiny older, maybe 17 y/o. The viewer is left to method his or her fill personal conclusions regarding the Grand Relate of illegal immigration and Third World poverty and colonialism and imperialism and exploitation and economics and gangs and so on. I can remember seeing a TV newsmagazine segment a few years ago on how these migrants gross Mexico on the tops of cargo trains. Not inside the boxcars, but clinging to the tops of the cars. Apparently, the interiors of the cars are too hazardous because of bandits and/or rapists and murderers – both free-lance thugs and organized gangsters. At any rate, the whole scene is totally lawless. Anybody who attempts this pace is taking their life into their believe hands. They’re beset upon by not only the aforementioned bandits, but also the Mexican authorities, who seem entirely unsympathetic, to build it mildly. At the time I thought: “What a big premise for a movie!” Seems like Mr. Fukunaga agreed.

I judge the trailer gives away too worthy already, so I’ll try to be careful what I say here. Willy is a member of Mara Salvatrucha and Sayra is making her draw North when their paths intersect atop a vow. Willy makes a moment-of-truth decision that permanently and irrevocably disrupts his life and suddenly binds the wide-eyed Sayra to his side from that instant on. Then the plug is on and it’s a vast one.

This movie is not only extremely graphic, but also very true-to-life and thoroughly realistic. For example, there’s a scene where an unarmed Willy is being hunted by two gunmen and I figured he would simply turn the tables on them and gain their guns. After all, Sylvester Stallone would honest laugh if it was a mere two killers after him, proper? Sylvester would then easily raze them both bare-handed in a few seconds, true? Even with his eyes closed if he wanted to. But then I realized that Willy without his contain gun and without his gang was impartial a skittish boy running for his life like a rabbit. At that point, I realized unbiased how obedient this movie was and I really got into it.

Fukunaga gets uniformly gorgeous low-key and histrionics-free performances out of his entire cast. Not a single feeble link among all of them. The two leads are clear standouts but there’s a lot of favorable work by the other actors. Lil’ Mago is absolutely terrifying; a figure straight out of a nightmare but aloof seeming human. Martha Marlene is comic and very touching when we realize what her fate is going to be. Smiley is true on the money – a grand peformance by a child actor. Scarface reminds us that not all of the Mara Salvatrucha are kids; some of them actually survive into their 30’s and 40’s and so on. I assume the guy playing El Sol gets somewhat overlooked. His character doesn’t have Lil’ Mago’s eerie appearance but he manages to be every bit as scary unbiased the same.

Also, Mr. Fukunaga clearly knows his Shakespeare. Willy has two different relationships that both echo “Romeo and Juliet” and there’s a scene at the waste that’s a unique version of “Et tu, Brute? ” from “Julius Caesar”. But what I like most about him is his obstinacy. He was given a Sundance Studios green light to get a film and he came up with a Spanish language story made in Mexico with an all-Hispanic cast. Not a single gringo in ogle, but don’t let the sub-titles discourage you from experiencing a generous, extremely well-made, deeply gripping film. Go ogle it and grasp the DVD when it comes out – it’s that safe.

Sin Nombre has it all – astronomical acting, comely cinematography, grand themes, and astonishing realism. The realism is no accident. Young filmmaker Cary Fukunaga spent months in Mexico, interviewing both immigrants and gang members about their experiences. He shot on dwelling, and many cast members are nonprofessionals. For example, Edgar Flores, in the lead role as a member of the Chiapas chapter of the brutal Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13) gang, is straight off the streets of Tegucigalpa, Honduras.

Despite the specific setting of the tumultuous U.S.-Mexico border, Sin Nombre addresses worthy and universal themes of damnation and redemption. At least, that’s how I saw it. In an interview, Fukunaga himself said he sees it as being about family – “the disintegration and recreation of the family unit in its current and varying forms.”

The space centers around a chance and fateful encounter between gang member Willy and a 15-year-old Honduran girl, Sayra (Paulina Gaitan), who is riding north through Mexico atop a lisp. Though Sayra’s traipse, viewers fetch an appreciation for the intense dangers faced by Central Americans trekking toward the promised land.

Without giving away anything, I can disclose you a bit of background on how the film came about. Fukunaga, a native of the San Francisco Bay Dwelling, was in film school in Fresh York when he read a Fresh York Times myth on a group of Mexican and Central American immigrants who died of asphyxiation and heat exhaustion while trapped and abandoned inside a refrigerated trailer. His short 2004 documentary about that case, “Victoria Para Chino,” won multiple film awards.

That project evolved into Sin Nombre, as Fukunaga explained in an IndieWire interview. Doing the research, he said, “I learned about the dreadful meander Central American immigrants went through in order to pick up to the United States – crossing the infinitely more risky badlands of Mexico on top of (not in) freight trains skedaddle for the US Border. It was like a world that belonged to the faded wild west.”

Against the advice of friends, Fukunaga gained intimacy with his topic by taking the same harrowing train-top fling that he would film. On his first scamper, with 700 Central American immigrants, the remark was attacked within three hours:

“We were somewhere in the pitch dusky regions of the Chiapan country side. In the alcove of the next yell car I heard the definite pops of gunshots, always louder than they seem in the movies, then the screams of immigrants passing the word: ‘Pandillas! Pandillas!’ (gangsters) . Everyone scattered, I could hear them running in past our tanker car. Not having any where to hurry to, I stayed on…. The next day I talked to two Hondurans who were next to the attack. They told me a Guatemalan immigrant didn’t want to give two bandits his money so they shot him and throw him under the explain. [Later] I learned the police had found the body of a Guatemalan immigrant, shot and abandoned…. Nothing could have driven home the sensation of awe and impotence than what I had felt first hand with those immigrants.”

Fukunaga’s willingness and ability to glimpse through the eyes of others probably owes powerful to his upbringing. Fukunaga is described in an L.A. Times article as “a wandering spirit with a Japanese father, a Swedish mother, a Chicano stepdad and an Argentine stepmom [who] can’t be reduced to the sum of his parts, ethnic or otherwise. Growing up, he shuffled from the suburbs to the country to the barrio (’Crips and Bloods, people getting shot’) to the East Bay’s hillside bourgeois enclaves. His family, he says, always has been a ‘conglomeration of individual, sort of displaced people,’ recombinations of relatives and step-relatives, blood kin and surrogate kin, parents and what he calls “pseudo-parents” who treated him like a son.”

With this background, Fukunaga was able to pick not only the immigrant experience, but the pathos of gang life in Central America and Mexico, with brutality and hopelessness transmitted from generation to generation. Sin Nombre doesn’t give the history or context for the Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13), which at 100,000-strong is widely considered one of the most fastest-growing and perilous gangs in the world. But you can secure that elsewhere on the Web.

In brief, the MS-13 is an outgrowth of the 1980s war in El Salvador, which led to a massive migration of up to two million refugees into the United States. Many settled in the Ramparts situation of Los Angeles, where the gang was founded. Strict U.S. immigration policies in more new years have paradoxically worsened the gang plight, allowing the MS-13 to score footholds in Central America and Mexico. The MS-13 is known for its bright tattoos, but some say members are engaging away from tattoos because they so brilliantly illuminate gang membership for authorities. Sin Nombre is getting universal acclaim, and richly deserves the directing and cinematography awards it garnered at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival.

There are both pros and cons to this remastered/rereleased Hitchcock boxed station. The pros are that all have been remastered (all of them were anamorphic despite what other reviews have stated except for the first edition of “Vertigo” on DVD–read the boxes of the new releases or better yet notice them) and the remastering job has resulted in colors being bolder in many cases (Do a comparison as I did) with images being crisper and with slightly better resolution. There is an exception to this–”The Man Who Knew Too Worthy” actually looks worse than the previous release. While colors are qualified the image clarity and detail are off. I’m not exactly clear what happened here but it must have been during the Telecine transfer process from film to video (and then DVD) . This is based on a head-to-head comparison with the other edition of the film and isn’t based on a terrible DVD. Instead, it’s related to the transfer not being quite as grand for this unique updated version. So if “Man” is one of your favorites I’d yell you to support the previous DVD. Also, there’s no paper inserts with chapter stops listed as on previous editions. Also, a couple of films didn’t have a mountainous disagreement but they were collected noticeable for the most allotment.

The DVDs are housed four to a DVD “book” with two on each side one on top of the other. I know what you’re thinking–they’ll accumulate scratched–but I didn’t recognize any potential for that. Aloof, you’ll need to be careful taking them out and putting them in and these holders are not as come by as the individual maintain cases. Each veil is decorated with images from the recent posters for each movie overlapping each other.

Extras are exactly the same as the recent releases for each disc. “The Making of Psycho” and “All About ‘The Birds’” which were on the recent discs themselves have been relocated to the bonus discs. There’s also three recent bonuses included. The first is a 15 slight excerpt from the AFI tribute focusing primarily on Hitch’s funny comments when he approved the Lifetime Achievement Award. I’ve long wanted to have this on DVD but do wish that Universal had licensed the entire AFI tribute as it was a charming and worthwhile evening. The second extra is a 30 dinky interview featuring Pia Lindstrom and William K. Everson and is a vintage videotape interview with Hitchcock from the 70’s. It’s quite a revealing interview with Hitchcock charming the hosts as usual. He discusses quite frankly his likes (pre-production) and dislikes (way actors like Montgomery Clift) . The third bonus is a 36 page booklet that, like the booklet that came with “Jaws”, is hardly valuable. It does include credits for each movie, some photos and brief comments about each film. It’ll be something you might gaze at once or twice.

The box itself has a crushed velvet exterior and is quite stunning. The cloak has a door that slides into the box to access the movies. So the pros are better transfers for most of the films. If you don’t have all of Hitch’s movies on DVD yet, this is a grand deal. The unique extras aren’t worth the effect of admission if you don’t already have all of these and while they peer better, the inequity may not be all that striking to you. With the release of Hitch’s TV indicate and other unique stuff coming out, it’s a matter of spending where one can.

I gave this station 4 stars for two reasons; 1) There are a number of so-so Hitchcock films in this space (”Torn Curtain”, “Topaz”, “Marnie” which is one that, despite Robin Wood’s absurd arguments to the contrary, I regain to be sinful Hitchcock and the luscious but light “Family Place”) . 2) “The Man Who Knew Too Powerful” should perceive BETTER than the previous edition but, in fact, looks a bit worse for the wear with less clarity and definition. 3) While we do some some current extras they are slim pickings. I would have loved to find more commentary tracks on these classic films from Hilton Green (Assistant Director on “Psycho” and a number of Hitch’s TV episodes), Bruce Dern or Karen Dark (on “Family Space”) and others on the notable films.

Some of Hitch’s finest films are here “Vertigo”, “Rear Window”, “The Man Who Knew Too Remarkable”, “The Anguish With Harry” (an acquired taste), “Psycho”, “Shadow of a Doubt”, “Sabotage”, “Frenzy”, etc but also some of his weaker thrillers as well. It’s a superb concise and inexpensive map to collect them all.

O.K., I have the box status in my hands, and although I have not watched every movie I have scanned them all in order to write the review. I am not reviewing the movies themselves, objective trying to definite up some of the confusion that seems to be surrounding this release.

I actually view the velvet box was rather nice, and I didn’t mind the four discs to a sleeve. The booklet is very nice, printed with lots of color on heavy stock and includes trivia and facts on each movie.

I read a review that said one of the films didn’t discover as gracious as the others, so when I scanned them I tried to pay particular attention to the relate quality. I found all of the movies to be crisp and super, so I would suggest maybe there was a poor disc in his box spot (? ) .

My only negative is that only Vertigo is remastered in Dolby 5.1. I impartial don’t understand digitally remastering the films and not the soundtrack.

However, the amount of vivid filmmaking included in this collection is almost overwhelming. Every film is a admire, and it’s filmmaking that has rarely been equaled, let alone surpassed.

Look, everyone is always going to have something to complain about (didn’t like the package, the sleeves, hasn’t done justice to the master), even myself with the soundtrack protest, but Universal has do together a 15 disc package of colossal films for $84.00. What’s that…$5.60 a disc?

The is a movie of ravishing images that taken together provide a lovely and ironical montage of “the sterling life.” In fact, by the waste I was reminded simultaneously of Thoreau’s statement that the mass of people live lives of unexcited desperation and Kierkegaard’s plan that the natural condition of human beings is that of despair. There is no residence. The movie consists of a series of loosely or unconnected scenes with runt or not attempt to link them. Many of the scenes are comely. Some are disturbing. None of them are listless, which is worthy given the length of the film (166 minutes) .

The beginning is memorable, with a helicopter flying over Rome with a statue of Christ hanging underneath. A celebrity journalist, portrayed brilliantly by Marcello Mastroianni (the new producer, Dino de Laurentiis, pulled out of the project when Fellini refused to cast Paul Newman in the lead role), is following the statue in order to write about it, but he and his team acquire distracted by women sunbathing in bikinis on a rooftop. In this and many other scenes, the large gap between faded and historical symbols of meaning and modern preoccupation with mere pleasure is articulated. The overwhelming sense in the film is of the colossal triviality of these people’s lives and the loss of upright purpose. There are only two exceptions in the film: Marcello’s halt friend Steiner, whose life is a search for meaning and truth, and a young girl Marcello first meets at a restaurant where she is a food server and then sees again in the last few moments of the film. But Steiner’s search is a futile one, leading him not merely to demolish himself but his two children as well. And the young girl is not merely a symbol of innocence, but of innocence lost, not to be found again. In the last few seconds of the film, after a drunken debauch, Marcello walks to the seashore at dawn. There he sees the young girl across a watery divide. She waves to him, and tries to weep something to him. But her words are drowned by the waves and the wind, and eventually they both smile, realizing that they he will never be able to hear what she has to say. The method that Marcello wistfully shrugs his shoulders is almost an acknowledgement that he is one of the damned. It is one of the most heartbreaking moments in unusual film, as well as one of the most poignant.

Rome itself is as prominent in this film as any of the characters, but it is not the Rome one finds in ROMAN HOLIDAY. Grand of the city looks not historic or glorious, but antiseptic, shoddily fabricated, barely reclaimed current ruins. There are a number of gross modernistic buildings and a number of the areas sight bleak and abandoned. This is all, of course, highly symbolic of the bleakness of the lives of the characters. Many films have discussions like this imposed on them (I judge of some of the exquisite parodies in episodes of Monty Python), but LA DOLCE VITA almost demands metaphysical discussion. Fellini is concerned with the fate of human beings in the fresh world, with what we have all lost and what we have failed to secure in its status.

Special mention has to be made of the astounding music for the film written by the incomparable Nino Rota, and easily stands as one of the very greatest film scores ever written, as integral to the success of the film as Bernard Hermann’s scores for NORTH BY NORTHWEST or PSYCHO or Ennio Morricone’s for A FISTFUL OF DOLLARS. It is not record or histrionic, but naughty and light, almost ironic, as if to underscore the manner in which the characters whistle while Rome burns itself out.

A spectacular film, one of my favorites ever. It is arguably Fellini’s greatest film, and one of the titanic monuments of cinema.

LA DOLCE VITA is neither abominable nor overrated. There is something to be said for the sparkling expansive number of film fans who like this one. It is an episodic film, but that is a feature of considerable of Fellini. In several films, Fellini builds his meaning in this way: not so worthy with a single continuing place, but with a series of smaller stories that add up to a total collection of ideas.

Maybe the secret (if there is one) of LA DOLCE VITA’s appeal is that it’s so darned absorbing all the time. This especially applies to the region concerning Steiner. Steiner is the key figure in the film, apart from Marcello himself, who is Fellini’s and the viewer’s counterpart. What Steiner represents to Marcello is of prime importance. The young reporter sees the older man as a perfected, idealized version of himself. He longs to emulate Steiner and is convinced this man knows how to live life fully. There is irony aplenty in the entire Steiner chronicle. When Marcello brings his wife to the Steiner party, they meet a few piquant, but mostly insufferablty pretentious ‘intellectual’ types. (the eminent Fellini ‘careless’ post-dubbing of dialogue in this scene particularly amusing: it seems to add to these characters’ disconnection from a legal self, as though they don’t even realize what they are actually saying) . Steiner himself associates with these people, yet does not truly seem to be one of them. He feels trapped by his fill pretentious circle of intellectuals. When Marcello whisper him how worthy he envies and admires him, Steiner replies:

“Don’t be like me. Salvation doesn’t lie within four walls. I’m too serious to be a dilettante and too grand a dabbler to be a professional. Even the most gloomy life is better than a sheltered existence in an organized society where everything is calculated and perfected.”

This gives Marcello grand to perceive for the rest of the film. And Steiner’s subsequent suicide confirms the deep suspicion growing within the protagonist that all of existence, as he himself has known it thus far, is fundamentally absurd and meaningless. For this reason the film is existential in its outlook. Marcello is the novel, urban human, trapped in an absurd universe. But Fellini, seems not fully despairing in his outlook. Believe, for example, the significance of Marcello’s interaction with the blonde girl in the cafe–she represents a simpler life away from the city and the over-complications of unusual existence. Many viewers have missed the fact that it is this same girl who waves to Marcello on the beach in the film’s final scene: she waves and is telling something he is never able to hear, so he waves once, and turns succor to the empty, inebriated crowd as they speculate about the unknowability of nature, embodied by a horrible, bloated fish.

LA DOLCE VITA is a tremendous film for the contrivance it pulls some viewers in and forces them to gaze the right narrate of what they are seeing. The film’s main theme is one it shares with fims of Antonioni: current man has become disconnected from the natural world and he suffers because of it. LA DOLCE VITA’s visual style is poetic, some of its characters are more than compelling and hard to forget, and its musical gain by Nino Rota is among the most memorable of all time.

Steiner is the key figure in the film, apart from Marcello himself, who is Fellini’s and the viewer’s counterpart. What Steiner represents to Marcello is of prime importance. The young reporter sees the older man as a perfected, idealized version of himself. He longs to emulate Steiner and is convinced this man knows how to live life fully. There is irony aplenty in the entire Steiner record. When Marcello brings his wife to the Steiner party, they meet a few provocative, but mostly insufferablty pretentious ‘intellectual’ types. (the renowned Fellini ‘careless’ post-dubbing of dialogue in this scene particularly amusing: it seems to add to these characters’ disconnection from a upright self, as though they don’t even realize what they are actually saying) . Steiner himself associates with these people, yet does not truly seem to be one of them. He feels trapped by his acquire pretentious circle of intellectuals. When Marcello bellow him how great he envies and admires him, Steiner replies:

“Don’t be like me. Salvation doesn’t lie within four walls. I’m too serious to be a dilettante and too considerable a dabbler to be a professional. Even the most dismal life is better than a sheltered existence in an organized society where everything is calculated and perfected.”

This gives Marcello grand to peek for the rest of the film. Many viewers have missed the fact that it is this same girl who waves to Marcello on the beach in the film’s final scene: she waves and is telling something he is never able to hear, so he waves once, and turns attend to the empty, inebriated crowd as they speculate about the unknowability of nature, embodied by a gruesome, bloated fish.

LA DOLCE VITA is a vast film for the diagram it pulls some viewers in and forces them to perceive the sincere order of what they are seeing. The film’s main theme is one it shares with fims of Antonioni: recent man has become disconnected from the natural world and he suffers because of it. The serial itself is respectable, but I am tired of seeing Mr. Jim, an positive company owner of VCI or employee, who keeps posting these “reviews” for every one of their serial DVDs, listing them all as perfect and lisitng so noteworthy fluff that one knows who he works for. Let the product deny for itself. It doesn’t need a shill!

Well, I contemplate so anyway. Bill Witney and John English directed the three sequels to the unusual and established themselves and Repulic studios as masters of the serial genre with the choreographed fights, well crafted chapter endings, and overall care in making these spellbinding.I set this one above the other Dick Tracy serials because they really outdid themselves in packing it with continuous action and imaginatively crafted scenes including ones in the middle of chapters which rivaled the chapter endings. This one does have a higher body count than most serials. There are six suspects who may be the invisible “Ghost” at the beginning and only two serene alive by the inaugurate of the final chapter.One very original thing to effect is that unlike most of Republic’s crime serials, there is no “economy chapter” in which we have flashbacks to scenes in previous chapters.If you devour serials, you should like this one.

Here’s a movie for dog lovers, the elderly, children of divorce, FOBs (Friends of Birds), extinct Boy Scouts, people yearning for adventure, and anyone who has ever loved… and lost. Up is for everyone. It made me laugh out loud, and it made me yell.

I opinion it would be tough for Up to match the emotional power of Wall-E. The two Pixar films are similar in their lack of dialogue in the first act, which helps deepen the emotional impact. Up begins with Carl, a disquieted young boy star-struck by a illustrious explorer; and kookie Ellie, who has a similar obsession. The two kids become posthaste friends, and relate to one day depart to Venezuela’s Paradise Falls. After getting married, they purchase their dream home and fix it up, hoping to occupy it with children. Carl and Ellie’s life together from childhood through used age is depicted, silently, with delicacy and subtlety. The first 15 minutes is like a celebration of a glad marriage, and you truly feel Carl’s distress when he is left alone. He sits slumped in his chair, talking to the house as if it is the missing Ellie.

When developers cessation in on Carl’s beloved home, he decides to fulfill his promise to Ellie and disappear to Paradise Falls. A weak balloon vendor, Carl lifts his home with hundreds of bright balloons. Stowing away on the porch is Russell, a pudgy, heroic kid trying to accept a scouting badge.

After landing in Paradise Falls, the customary man and the runt boy are joined by a golden retriever named Dug who can talk with his collar, and a stout rare bird that bonds with Russell (he names her “Kevin”) . Dug is priceless: spot-on for every dog that ever lived, including an obsession with squirrels. Through a series of cessation calls and adventures, the quartet vanquishes a villain, saving the day. And Russell earns his scouting badge.

In the process, Carl learns to let go of his shaded mourning for Ellie, and live life again. When this happens, a truly magical thing happens. Before, Carl’s craggy face is gray and monochromatic. At the moment of his transformation, Carl’s face is awash in color, and he is surrounded by magnificent hues. It reminded me of The Wizard of Oz, when Dorothy steps out of her gray world and into a candy-colored Munchkinland. Carl, too, enters a whole fresh world.

Up is a deeply emotional film, paunchy of truth. It’s the year’s best film. Earn another triumph for Pixar.

Someday, Pixar is going to do it — they’re going to accomplish an emotionally uninspiring, lackluster entertaining movie. But in the meantime, they’re aloof putting out delectable consuming movies like “Up,” which defies the usual kid-movie conventions by starring a crotchety outmoded man. It’s a charming, fun dinky adventure yarn with flying dogs and balloon-powered houses, but underlying it is a bittersweet runt tale about loss and adore.

As a child, the shrinking Carl Fredricksen bonded with the oddball Ellie over their shared cherish of adventure, the explorer Charles Muntz, and Paradise Falls. They later married, depart into their “clubhouse” together, and lived a long, sadly childless life together. When Ellie died, she had never fulfilled her dream of going to Paradise Falls.

Now crotchety, alone and harassed by a loyal estate developer, Carl (Ed Asner) is finally ordered to a retirement home. But he isn’t going quietly — instead he attaches thousands of balloons to his house and floats it away toward South America. Dreadful kid was unprejudiced trying to accumulate an “assisting the elderly” badge.

And the jungle slouch to Paradise Falls turns out to have some surprising obstacles: a broad emulike bird that Russell names Kevin, a talking dog named Dug (”I am jumping on you, bird!”), and a mysterious musty man who lives deep in the heart of the jungle. Turns out the frail guy is very familiar to Carl — and to steal Kevin, he’s willing to sacrifice Carl and Russell.

Industry experts were babbling about how “Up” wouldn’t be as accepted as the previous Pixar movies, because the protagonist is basically a crusty faded coot. Well, shows what they know. It ended up becoming one of those classic movies that somehow appeals to all ages — while the humor and action appeal to children, adults can indulge in Carl’s esteem for his lost wife, and his dull realization that he’s clinging to the past.

In fact, the first ten minutes are some of the most heart-tugging, quietly bittersweet scenes I’ve seen in a long time. Without a word, they prove all the ups and downs of a realistic marriage — joys, sorrows (Ellie’s inability to have children), growing musty together, and finally loss.

But it’s not a depressing movie by any stretch — in fact, it’s like a childhood fantasy advance to life, complete with a floating house suspended on hundreds of balloons, and biplanes piloted by a talking dog army.. Plenty of tremendous dialogue (”Do you want to play a game? It’s called Notice Who Can Go the Longest Without Saying Anything.” “Frigid! My mom loves that game!”) and an action-packed climax in an primitive airship.

Ed Asner is absolutely perfect as ubergrouch Carl — crotchety, grumpy, and obvious to fulfill his wife’s lifelong dream, but gradually realizing he’s clinging to the past. Nagai is equally perfect as Carl’s polar opposite: a naive, chattery Scout who is sure to reunite Kevin with her baby chicks. And the utterly adorable Dug and the other dogs deserve special spy. These creatures are utterly hilarious — they talk (”I hid under your porch because I appreciate you”) and act the device dogs would if they talked. Three words: cone of shame.

The two-disc edition is going to have some very nice extras, but once again people with regular-def DVDs are going to salvage shafted because the Blu-ray edition will have a bunch of queer stuff. Grr. As for this one, there’s a digital copy, the director’s audio commentary, kinda-alternate-ending “The Many Endings of Muntz,” and the documentary “Adventure Is Out There” about the research for this movie.

There are also a pair of adorable gripping shorts. “Partly Cloudy” has a much-abused stork having to verbalize potentially outrageous baby creatures from a kind but clueless cloud. And “Dug’s Special Mission” is a sort of backstory for the adorable Dug, explaining what the heck he was doing before he met up with Carl and Russell.

“Up” continues Pixar’s running tally of gloriously piquant, emotionally layered movies that the entire family can savor. With that, I have only one more thing to say… SQUIRREL!

Any film that can find the family together for a fun,wholesome, and attractive plan, and possess the interest of all for it’s entire length, gets 5 stars in my book. “Casper” is one of those films. It may not go down as some enormous share of cinematic art, but it is one that all generations can luxuriate in, will leave you with a smile, and something to talk about with kids afterwards.

Based on the archaic funny book stories, “Casper” is a very profitable but very lonely ghost. He lives in an weak mansion, that has seen better days. He is not alone in this tremendous house though, he lives with his three very irascible(but comic) uncles,”Stretch”, “Stinky” and “Fatso”. Casper only wants someone to fade in,so he could have a friend, the uncles on the other hand, do their very best to horror away any visitors.

So when a greedy woman inherits the property, and believes there is a buried worship inside, she hires an array of ‘ghostbusters’ to rid the house of all spirits. None seem to be able to handle this unpleasant trio, until one day a ghost psychiatrist and his lonely daughter(also looking for a friend),recede in and try to tame the threesome. From there it’s a fun and wild trail, and a touching legend of friendship.

The film has a terrific cast that works well with the incredible animation and special effects. Bill Pullman and Christina Ricci are the father and daughter team that encourage these spirits. Cathy Moriarty(”Forget Paris”), and Eric Slothful as her bumbling assistant add their talents as they go for the worship.Lots of great names are cameoed throughout. Don Novello, and Dan Aykroyd reprise their roles of Father Guido Sarducci, and ghostbuster Dr. Raymond Stantz for brief appearances, honest to name a couple.

The voices including Brad Garrett as “Fatso” are sterling, and you can never go obnoxious when James Horner scores a film with impartial the apt touches.

It’s rated PG for some occassional peaceful language and thematic elements, and at an hour and a half, it honest the suitable length, and is a palatable blueprint to expend some laugh out loud family time together.
